Mir's Musings

"Well," said Pooh, "what I like best," and then he had to stop and think. Because although eating honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called. ~ A.A. Milne

Is my Mom's Life Worth $800?

Here's a story that my mom told me yesterday. You tell me what's wrong with this picture.

On December 1st of last year, she was out in the woods with her husband, Bill and step-son, Dave. They were deer hunting. My mom's job is to wander around, and if she sees a deer, she runs it in toward the cabin, where Bill is situated, or to the deer stand, where Dave is perched. Mom was walking east to west, just passing the deer stand, when Dave heard a lot of rustling in the bushes, and breaking of branches. He thought, "This is going to be one huge deer." What emerged instead, was the largest brown bear he'd ever seen in the wild. And it was moving fast. Toward mom. When it was about 20 feet from her, Dave yelled loudly, and the startled bear took off for the north instead. Mom never knew that she was about to be lunch.

I asked her, "Why didn't he just shoot the bear? I mean, it was headed right for you." She said, that he didn't know if it was bear season or not. Bear and deer season overlap, but he wasn't sure if it was okay to shoot the bear. "So what," I said, "it was charging you!" Mom said, "It's a steep fine if you kill a bear when it's not in season. It's $800! Dave didn't want to have to pay a fine!"

It turns out that it was the very last day of bear season. "Dave was mad enough to slam his fist down on the table! He could have had a bear skin rug!"

I told mom to tell Dave that the next time a bear is charging my mama, he needs to shoot the damn thing, and I'll send him the $800.

Mad enough to slam his fist on the table because he didn't get a bear skin rug.

But your mom wasn't mad.

Fascinating.
